Fall is here, and the leaves are changing! Here are some of the best states to see some of the most beautiful colors of the year.

Summer has officially left the building, and it’s time for fall! With fall comes beautiful cool weather and even prettier changing leaves, painting the United States in reds, yellows, oranges and greens. Autumn is also one of the best times of the year to travel, so if you’re planning on using some of your downtime this season to visit a new place, or even a classic favorite, we thought we’d share a list of our five favorite states to enjoy fall’s seasonal colors!

5. Oregon

Sure, it can get a little rainy up in Oregon, but the Pacific Northwest has some of the best sights to be seen once autumn hits. Oregon is also known for its fruit, and when apples are in season, there are few places to get a better cup of fresh, hot cider. Oregon also offers a unique opportunity to see what a gorgeous fall landscape looks like up against the coast. Some of the trees might be covered in fog, but the way the sunset matches the yellows, reds and oranges of the leaves is sure to leave anyone who visits speechless.

4. Minnesota

Minnesota residents know it’s important to enjoy the summer and fall because once the winter arrives, there’s no looking back. Luckily, fall is gorgeous enough to make you forget all about the sub-zero temperatures that are just a short way away. Known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes, the trees look unbelievable up against the natural landscapes and waterfalls. Minnesota is also a great place to enjoy classic fall staples like apples, pumpkin patches, carnivals, local restaurants and football.

3. Maine

It’s tough to beat New England when fall sets In, and Maine is one of the stars of the show. Maple, oak and birch trees line the horizons, and when mixed with the gorgeous northeastern coastal views, it’s easy to see why Maine is such a treat in the fall. It’s also one of the most active times for fishermen, and nothing beats the taste of a nice, warm, buttery lobster roll fresh from the icy Maine waters, maybe served with a side of chowder. For dessert? How about some apple cider or jam? Maine has all of the flavors that keep you warm once it starts to get a little chilly, making the brisk temperatures more than worth it.

2. Colorado

We go from maple, oak and birch trees to aspens in the beautiful state of Colorado. The state best known for its capital, Denver, being one mile high in the sky uses its spectacular elevations to bring residents and visitors one of the best autumn experiences in the entire nation. Fall is the perfect time to go for a hike or visit Rocky Mountain Park, giving you the best vantage point and look down on land that, somehow, wasn’t painted on a canvas. Nope, it’s just Colorado, and it somehow gets better when you add a light layer of snow to the gorgeous colors and stunning wildlife. Colorado is easily one of the best states to visit any time of the year, but fall takes it to the next level.

1. Vermont

Vermont, while known for its particularly brutal winters and leafless trees, is anything but bland in the fall. Maple trees span all across the state and run as far as the eye can see, and their leaves have become sort of an unofficial mascot of this season, as you can usually find decorative ones lining the shelves of every store. While it can be rainy, it also usually has perfect weather for those who love to throw on a hoodie, drive around, and take in all the natural beauty the state has to offer. And be sure to take down a tall stack of pancakes with some warm, local homemade syrup while you’re there!
